Aadi Pooram or Adi Pooram is celebrated during the Tamil month of Aadi (which falls in the months of July – August) on the Pooram Nakshatra. Aadi Pooram is an annual festival which is celebrated in a grand scale in the Vaishnavite shrines of Tamil Nadu. Aadi Pooram marks the birthday of the Tamil poetess, Andal, who is renowned for her masterwork in Tamil literature. Andal composed Tamil devotional songs in praise of Lord Maha Vishnu. Thiruppaavai and Naachiar Thirumozhi are notable among them. Also known as Kothai, Andal spent her life time in worshiping Lord Vishnu. It is on the fifth day of the bright half of the Shravan that Naga Panchami, or the festival of snakes, is celebrated in India. Snake worship, no doubt, owes its origin to man's natural fear of these reptiles. However, in Hindu culture, they own a prominent place. Hindu mythologies are filled with stories and fables about snakes, the most important being the Sheshnaga of Lord Vishnu (it is on this snake that Lord Vishnu reclines while sleeping in the sea). Thus, it is quite understandable that a festival called Naga Panchami is observed in India, in the honor of snakes, every year.

Shravan Purnima is an auspicious day for the Brahmins because on this day Lord Hayagriva, the protector of the Vedas, was born. Lord Hayagreeva also referred as the God of wisdom and knowledge. During the observance of Aavani Avittam or Upakarma, Sacred Thread ceremony (Yagnopaveetha Dhaarana or Janeyu Dhaarana) is performed. This ceremony is observed as the Vedic rituals. On this day, children start their Vedic studies. The day after Avani Avittam is observed as Gayathri Japa Day.

About Avani Avittam Rituals
On this day, a Mahasankalpam or a vow is taken for atonement of all our sins in the past year. The Brahmins take a holy dip and wear a new sacred thread called Yajnopavit or Janeyu.
The first step is 'prayashchita', a prayer to atone for sins. It says, For the removal of all my sins and thereby to secure a divine blessing and for qualifying myself to perform the essential duties of Brahmanas as prescribed in the Vedas and Smritis and adopted by the good in their conduct, I put on this Yagnopavita.
When the thread is worn, another mantra is recited, which means -I put on the sacred thread which is highly pure, is inseparable from God, is capable of prolonging life, and is the foremost in the accomplishment of a Brahmana. May such pure Yagnopavita bring strength and dignity.
While removing the old thread, the mantra means I throw away the broken, dirty old thread. May the new one bring long life and Brahmana's brilliance.
Avani Avittam Significance
Upakramam means the beginning. On this day, the Yajurvedis begin to read the Yajur Veda for the next six months. The day is auspicious because, as per Indian mythology, Lord Vishnu was incarnated as Lord Hayagriva, the lord of knowledge, the one who restored the Vedas to Brahma.

Lunar eclipse has a religious importance in hinduism, Sutaka (Ashaucha)n starts before 4 prahara for Total lunar eclipse, if there is a moonrising during eclipse then one shouldn't eat anything from previous day otherwise if the moon has already risen then sutaka is only for 4 prahara for Total Eclipse and 3 prahara for partial eclipse, no sutaka ashaucha for penumbral eclipse. if there are clouds observe eclipse based on the timing when eclipse begin and ends.
